NATIONALLY ACCLAIMED AUTHOR CHRISTOPHER CAROSA TO PRESENT FINDINGS REGARDING THE “LEGEND” OF THE BIRTH OF THE HAMBURGER AT THE ERIE COUNTY FAIR
Award-winning writer to give 6:00pm presentation on Saturday, August 11th at the ECFair Cooks! Building
Hamburg, NY August 2, 2018 – Nationally acclaimed author Christopher Carosa will reveal the results of his exhaustive research into the “legend” of the birth of the hamburger at this year’s Erie County Fair. Carosa, an award-winning writer and popular and engaging speaker, will present his findings for the first time ever on Saturday, August 11th at 6:00pm. Using classic crime-solving techniques, he will disclose the verdict of his extensive foray into late-nineteenth century and early-twentieth century original source documentation in the ECFair Cooks! Building located at the top of the Avenue of Flags. Carosa has agreed to meet with members of the press immediately following his presentation.
Did the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis really inaugurate the “hamburg sandwich” as reported by the New York Tribune and as taught by McDonald’s famous Hamburger University? Or was the first hamburger made in 1900 at Louis Lunch, a diner in New Haven, Connecticut as reported by the New York Times and recognized as such by the Library of Congress? Or did Fletcher “Old Dave” Davis first place a ground beef patty on bread in “the late 1880’s” as suggested by the Dallas Morning News? And, if the hamburger really was first invented in 1885 either by Charles Nagreen at the Outagamie County Fair in Seymour, Wisconsin, or by Charles and Frank Menches at the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, New York, which fair occurred first?
“Up until now, no one has undertaken an exhaustive research survey of each of these stories,” says Carosa. “While I can’t spoil the surprise, I can tell you that there’s incontrovertible evidence that at least 2 of the origin stories are blatantly false.”
Carosa’s forthcoming book, Hamburger Dreams, contains thorough documentation of this and other research he’s compiled on the subject. For more information, visit http://hamburgerdreams.com/ or connect with Carosa on social media.
Christopher Carosa has published several books, including A Pizza The Action: Everything I Ever Learned About Business I Learned By Working in a Pizza Stand at the Erie County Fair. A reporter and columnist for national and local media outlets, Carosa currently serves as president of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists.
The Erie County Fair runs from August 8th through the 19th. For admission information, go to https://www.ecfair.org/p/info/admissionparking.
